Can Therapists Keep PHI Private?
As technology advances, so do the methods of communication and information storage.
Access to certain private health information (PHI) is necessary to effectively meet individuals' health care needs.
But, how much access should one have to others' PHI? Under what circumstances should health care agents share this information with other health care and non-health care providing parties? Is it ethical for a health care provider to divulge possible incriminating PHI to other parties? These are the types of issues arising in our age of advancing technology, and the issues that laws such as HIPAA attempt to address.

Just What the Doctor Ordered
According to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society publication, Electronic Prescribing for the Medical Practice, adverse drug reactions (ADEs) are most often due to "illegible handwriting, incoherent abbreviations and dose designations, unclear telephone or verbal orders, or ambiguous orders and fax-related problems." At least 25 percent of ADEs could be prevented through electronic prescribing (e-prescribing), according to one report.
E-prescribing can document online, for physicians and pharmacists to access easily, all the pertinent information about a patient's medications, nutritional supplements, drug and food allergies.
However, despite the promise of safer, more efficient health care through e-prescribing in particular and information technology in general, physicians and hospitals in the United States remain sluggish converting from a paper-based to an online health care infrastructure.
